Good but not Great ... August 12, 2010

I purchased the Haier HLC22R1 22-Inch LCD HDTV/DVD Combination several months ago for use in my Mother-in-Law's bedroom. This review is a combination of her observations and my having to show her how to use things, explain features, and adjust the unit.
Pros:
- The picture quality is good ... not great mind you, but sufficent for her viewing needs
- The sound quality is OK, considering that they're built-in LCD speakers. And the sound on some LCD TV's I've owned/seen is too quiet at full volume; this set's volume is fine.
- The tiltable stand. While the amount of tilt isn't huge - nor should it be on a TV stand since it could make the TV too top heavy - it's enough to make sure you can see the TV from normal viewing positions
- After several months of moderate to heavy DVD usage, the DVD player works still fine. I've personally had bad luck with combo units in the past, but this one is working as advertised
- At the time I bought it, it was the least expensive 22inch LCD TV DVD combo on Amazon; while there are a few units out there now that are a little cheaper, this one is still comparitively inexpensive
Con:
- The buttons on the remote are too small to be easily read by my MIL, and the pause and play commands are shared by the same button, which sometimes confuses her
Overall, this is a good, solid unit. While it's not the best TV I've ever owned, it's far from the worst. I recommend it as a good TV to put into a spare bedroom or office. At 22 inches, the screen really isn't big enough to use as your primary TV for your home/apartment.

I'm quite happy with the TV so far as I've not had it very long, but I'm not the primary watcher of this set.My wife loves the simplicity of operation with using only the Directv remote.

We needed a tv to watch our DVDs on. Our large one is not compatible with any dvd/vcr. This tv/dvd combo is great for that.

I'm not really picky at all about picture quality but this TV has such a poor picture that I notice it every time I'm watching it. I bought this to replace a TV in our trailer that had almost zero viewing angle when watching from below (our mount is up high, we sit on seats to look up at it). I noticed it had a good viewing angle listed, which was a big part of why I got it. But I really had to play around with the settings to be able to view from sitting down, and that was only a decent picture. And then that would lower the quality considerable while watching from higher (standing or up in the bunks). Now going back to just the default setting and watching from right in front of the TV was decent as far as color goes but it was still noticeably grainy, not at all what I expected. This was while watching DVD's, by the way. The sound it just okay, gets loud enough. It's very light, thin, and good amount of viewing space versus the overall size of the TV. I'm usually one who never has a problem with picture quality, I don't require a perfect picture to be happy, but in this case I was still quite disappointed and would never recommend this to anyone else. This is probably the one time I wish I had spent more and gone with a better TV brand name.

I have been looking for a 22" HD tv and looked at many brands. I saw a lot of ads for Haier in Macy's and Amazon. I have seen their appliances a lot and they have a good reputation. So I decided to buy their 22 inch TV. It took me many attempts to get the color, sharpness and clarity to my liking. I have had it for about a month and cannot say I really like
this TV. But the price is good and I am using it in the kitchen and I also don't want the trouble of returning it. This is a TV/DVD combo so I am wondering whether that has anything to do with the quality of the picture. All in all, I will keep it
not because I am thrilled with it but I can't be bothered.
